The idea for Thai Lottery... and Other Stories from Pattaya, Thailand emerged while talking to an ex-colleague who now lives in Bangkok. We were nursing our Singha beers and watching an elderly lady who was half-heartedly selling tickets for the government sponsored draw. He told me about the Huay Tai Din, based on the winning numbers from the main lottery. Although banned by law, these "underground" schemes are roughly ten times as popular as their official counterpart. He went on to tell me that the sister of an acquaintance had worked as an agent for one of these illegal schemes. It had all gone badly wrong and her family had been picking up the pieces ever since. He didn't have any details.
The first story in this book describes what might happen to a girl who is trying make a few extra Baht for her family by working in the illegal lottery. It is of course a work of fiction.

A number of friends have read the book as it has taken shape, so I have received a few comments along the way. Most have been positive and the only person who really hated it, was kind enough to explain exactly why. A second draft quickly followed. My favourite review, was from a lady called Lucy. I had given the book to her husband and he inadvertently loaded it onto her IPad. She was kind enough to say it was “unputdownable”. Lucy also informed her husband that if he had any plans to visit Thailand without her, he could forget them.
